Set in London 1913, during the height of the British Suffragette movement, the play is centred on a love-affair between two fictional suffragettes. One upper-class woman, Lady Celia Cain and the other a working-class girl, Eve Douglas. Much of the play is set in Holloway Prison, where the characters are repeatedly sent and hunger strike for the cause.

This skirt was created for the character of Eve Douglas, who is a troubled but spirited young woman, new to the suffragette movement. She meets Celia in prison and the two fall in love, however each time she returns to prison her love unravels and she is ultimately subjected to the real life brutality of force feeding.
